You’re psyched to start your blogging journey, but you have no idea how to select and purchase a domain name. Before you actually purchase a domain name, there are some important factors to consider.
IDENTIFY THE NICHE FOR YOUR BLOG
If you have a general idea on the type of content that you plan on creating for your blog, you should look to purchase a domain name that identifies your target niche. There are so many different domain names that you can pick and the truth is it can get overwhelming.
If you are just getting started with your blog, you need to be spending time creating awesome content, not pondering on an epic domain name.
Let’s take a look at some helpful tips that will help you pick the right domain name for your blog.
1. Use an appropriate domain name extension
There are many different extensions of domains that people constantly register every day, and for some blogs, it gives them their own unique identity. The truth is though, the majority of website traffic is directed to the following extensions below:
The “.com” domains receive roughly 75% of all internet traffic and are generally considered to have higher credibility with searches.
In order to establish your blog online using a “.com” domain is highly recommended. The other extensions are also good, but in the wild land of the internet the, “.COM” is still the reigning champ.
2. Perform Keyword Research for Your Domain
A domain name is a way to brand yourself and your content online. It is a way that people will remember your site and come back to it. The easier you make that for people the better it is. Exact name domains tend to get ranked higher on Google, but they are usually expensive to purchase. You should also try to gain an idea of how much search traffic a particular keyword in your niche receives every month.
A good way to do that is through the Google Keyword Planner Tool. It will give you average monthly search volumes for a specific keyword and how competitive it is to rank for. Once you are there type in the specific keywords that you wish to check for. For the example, below we are looking at the keywords ” coffee varieties “.
- Once you click search Google will come back with a long list of keyword ideas and the related search traffic they receive on a monthly basis.
- You will also see how tough it is to rank for those keywords and how much top page ads are costing per click. This should give you an idea about the kind of traffic your related niche is getting on a monthly basis.
The name of your domain should have real keywords, not something that was completely made up. It will not only help you rank more effectively, but it will look more professional. Two-word domain names are a great strategy.
3. Keep The Name Short
You have to begin to think of the user before you register your domain name.
If a person wants to quickly visit a site, they don’t want to type in a super long domain name, they want to get there quickly. Think about how quick it takes you to type in “Yahoo.com” or “Google.com”.
You don’t even think, you just type away. Even though those names are not real words, they are extremely easy to remember and type.
Your domain name shouldn’t exceed more than 15 characters. Keep it short, simple, fun and creative.
4. Create a Relevant Name
The name of your blog should be relevant to the content you create. Let’s assume you plan to start a blog in the health and diet niche.
The name of your blog should be related to health and diet, it’s not rocket science.
Your domain name should describe exactly what your site is about. If a visitor comes across your site through organic search, they will be more likely to click on it if the domain name identifies it.
You can most likely guess what Financial Samurai is about. I’ll give you a hint, it’s money related .
5. Avoid Numbers and Hyphens
Using numbers in your domain name is not only hard to remember for people, but it makes it very difficult to rank for.
Domain names that have numbers in them tend to have a very tough time ranking for relevant keywords in their related niche.
Using hyphens in your domain name should also be avoided. Hyphens are often misunderstood and if someone spreads the word about your website having a hyphen in there will throw them off.
6.) Check out Some Expired Domains Names
You are probably thinking to yourself, what the heck is an expired domain name?
If you are serious about blogging you will read the full length of this section.
THIS IS GOLD !!!
An expired domain is a domain name that was once registered and then the domain owner chose not to renew the name.
Once you buy your domain name, you will have to pay an average of $10-$15 per year in order to keep ownership of it.
Most people that purchase domain names register them for usually 1-2 years. Sometimes, they just forget to renew them.
Once they fail to do that the domain is “expired” and your domain name registrar can offer it for sale. You no longer own the domain name.
So what does this mean for you?
This means that you can find these expired domains through a database and register them yourself. One of the best sites to do this is ExpiredDomains.net.
Why is purchasing an expired domain different from creating a brand new domain?
Registering the right expired domain name can put your blog at a serious advantage IF PICKED CORRECTLY.
Some of the main reasons are below.
- Aged Domain Name – The name of the domain name is a lot older and has more of an authority online. Domain names that are older than 2-3 years tend to rank quicker because they have previous history with search engines.
- Pre-existing Backlinks – Domain names that are 2-3 years or older will tend to have more backlinks on the web than brand new domains. This can help your blog rank quicker when compared to purchasing a brand new domain.
- Pre-existing Traffic – A lot of expired domains already have traffic coming to them even though there is no longer an active site. How is this possible? Since the pages of the old site are most likely indexed, people will still make their way to the old site. Obviously, the traffic will go down the longer the domain name sits as expired, but aged domains with healthy link flow will have organic and direct traffic still coming to it. This obviously depends on the extent to which the domain has been previously developed.
The Expired Domain Selection Process
- If you want to purchase a domain name that already has a bit of web authority and traffic, this is possible.
- If you are planning to build a domain name with a specific keyword or a set of keywords in mind, you can check to see if there are expired domains which have those keywords in the name.
Step 1.) Register with ExpiredDomains.net
It’s 100% free and I’m not trying to sell you anything.
Step 2.) Browse the “MarketPlace Domains” section
Once you are registered, the site can look a bit overwhelming, but its actually very functional and easy to use.
You will see that you have a section for “Deleted Domains” and a section for “Marketplace Domains”.
Select the “Marketplace Domains” along with “GD Traffic”. This will filter out expired domains with verified monthly traffic.
This will show you the currently expired domains that are available to register at Godaddy that already have pre-existing traffic.
How cool is that?
Not only does it show you the traffic, but a ton of other vital domain information like:
- The year the domain was registered denoted as (WBY)
- The number of existing backlinks denoted as (BL)
- The current monthly traffic that the domain receives
- The current price of the domain
- Number of bids on the domain
From the screenshot above, you can see that the first domain (tamildubmovies.net) receives over 116k monthly visitors.
This isn’t an exact figure, but its close to it. That is an insane amount of traffic.
Most blogs have trouble getting to 10,000 visitors a month in their first year, this domain already receives over 100k visitors per month.
Looking at the domain name you can see that its most likely a website related to movies since it has the keyword “movies’ in the name.
If you were planning to build a website about movies, this would be a domain name that would start you off quickly in terms of traffic.
Step 3.) Finding a Keyword Specific Domain
This is actually pretty easy and all it requires on the website is for you to apply some filters.
Let’s imagine that you are passionate about coffee and want to create a blog around it.
Having the keyword “coffee” in your domain name can bring brand recognition, authority, and identity to your blog.
What we will do is filter expired domain names that might have the keyword “coffee” in it.
Type in the keyword “coffee” in the search bar and make sure you have the following options below showing up.
Once you have these options selected, you need to click “Search” at the top of the bar for that keyword.
Once you do that it will query all the expired domains that contain the keyword “coffee”.
Step 4.) Domain Filtration Process
This filters by all expired and deleted domains.
This is powerful.
The next step is to apply some Filters so we can find a coffee domain that is short and has a popular extension. You need to click on the “Show Filter” button below the keyword.
This will bring up the following menu below.
This is something no internet marketer will ever show you without selling you something.
In order to find a good domain, we need to apply some relevant filters. Starting with the “Common” tab we need to filter out some domain settings.
Under the “Domain Name Settings” section check that the domain doesn’t have the following:
- No numbers
- No Hyphens
- No Consecutive Hyphens
- No Adult Names
- The max character length is set to 15 characters
Under the “Domain Lists” make sure the following are checked:
- Deleted Domains
- GoDaddy Domains
- Marketplace Domains
If you want to target domains for coffee in a specific language you can specify this in the “Dictionary Word Domains” section.
- I have selected English
There are also additional SEO filters that you can filter by, but that is up to you. This is more advanced.
This can be found in the “Additional” and “Adwords and SEO” sections.
Once you click the blue “Apply Filter” button at the bottom, below are the results you will get.
There are over 30,000 expired and deleted domains with the keyword “coffee” in them that you can choose from. I personally like “www.cupscoffee.com”.
This will help you find relevant domains for your specific niche that already have authority online.
Powerful doesn’t even begin to describe it. It’s a systematic way of how to select and purchase a domain name that will be effective.
If you want a more advanced overview of www.expireddomains.net, check the following blog post below. It is extremely involved with careful step by step procedures.
Again I will not try to sell you anything.
Step 5.) WORD OF CAUTION > Blacklisted Domains
Before you actually go and purchase the domain, you need to check if it was previously blacklisted by Google and other search engines. This could have happened for many different reasons:
- The website previously contained malware
- It was a spam website
- The site was previously a phishing site
What happens to a blacklisted domain is that the search engines remove the site from their indexing and the domain loses that traffic. Most of the time the reason they are blacklisted is due to Malware or suspicious site activity and traffic.
To check if the domain is blacklisted go to www.mxtoolbox.com and type in the name of the expired domain. Below is what the results will look for the expired domain www.cupscoffee.com.
You can see that the blacklist status came back as positive and that the expired domain is safe to purchase.
It also gives you other information related to the domain and its old links.
These are more advanced domain topics that we will talk about in another section.
7.) Register the Domain For Cheap
Domains can cost a lot of money.
If you are a first-time domain name buyer, you may be eligible for domain discounts. Once you have decided on your domain name, the next step is to go ahead and buy it.
We recommend you use BlueHost to register your domain name. They offer extremely affordable options and the setup process is extremely easy.
Before you end up paying for your domain, go to www.retailmenot.com and type in “Bluehost” in the search menu.
This will show you discounts codes that are available for first-time domain name buyers. You apply these codes at your checkout and sometimes the cost of your domain name is under $5.
